Using a shared archive of scanned images found in books at the Pratt library, this assignment centered on creating a visual narrative that relies solely on imagery. Attention to how the sequence and pacing of the images shape the story or evoke an experience is essential. The final deliverable is a book consisting of 96 pages, made up of 6 signatures, measuring 4.25 x 5.5in.
My conceptual approach to this assignment was my current obsession with stereotypical ‘manly man’ imagery and characters (cowboys, knights, warriors, etc.). I built narratives that play on the depiction of these men in different media and their relationships with the various aspects of their lives.
Printing the entire book on vellum paper allowed each page to communicate with one another and reinforce the narrative rhythm. It also gave me the chance to introduce design aspects that can not be seen in other paper mediums, like windows and multiple-page layering of images.
